Chia seeds come from the desert plant Salvia Hispanic, a member of the mint family. Salvia hispanica seed's common name is "chia". Its origin is believed to be in Central America where the seed was a staple in the ancient Aztec diet.
Chia is an annual herbaceous plant that can reach nearly 1 meter (3 feet) in height. The plant bears spikes of small blue, purple, or white flowers that have a high rate of self-pollination.
