  • Olive oil
  • Borage oil
  • Primrose oil

Step 2: Choose Your Essential Oil

Popular essential oils include:

  • Peppermint essential oil
  • Lavender essential oil

Step 4: Massage Your Scalp

Gently massage the oil into the scalp for a few minutes. If your hair is curly then you can segregate your hair into small parts to avoid missing out on any areas. Use into circular motion to gently rub the oil into your scalp,

Did You Know?

Massaging your scalp helps relieve stress and also enhances blood circulation to your follicles. It also promotes hair growth and can also strengthen your follicles.

Step 5: Wrap a Warm Cloth around Your Hair

Tie your hair into a bun & wrap a warm cloth around the forehead. It opens up the pores & cuticles, allowing for deeper penetration of the oils into your scalp and hair follicles.

Step 6: Rinse It Off Well

After you apply the oil, you can leave it overnight & wash it off with shampoo the next day. Use normal or cold water to rinse your hair & clean it thoroughly.

Mistakes to Avoid While Oiling Your Hair

Don't Comb Your Hair Right after Oiling It : Hair is vulnerable to break at this point as the scalp is relaxed. It can weigh your hair down and combing your hair right after oiling it will only cause it to break.

Don't Wash Too Soon : Don't get rid of the oil so soon. Allow the oil to sit on your scalp for at least one hour. This helps oils to penetrate through the follicles and nourish your scalp.

Don't Overuse the Oil : When you apply too much oil to your hair it means you'd have to use extra shampoo to wash it off. This can strip away your hair's natural oils along with the excess oil you're attempting to get off.

Don't Tie Your Hair Up : Tying hair can make your hair prone to breakage. After oiling hair is in a vulnerable state & is already weighed down by the oil. Tying can lead to hair breakage.

Don't Wrap With a Towel : Towels are rough & can break your hair when soaked in oil. You can use a warm plain cotton cloth or shirt instead.

Don't Overuse Your Shampoo : Wash off the excess oil but don't overuse shampoo in an attempt to get rid of the excess oil. Using too much shampoo on your hair can remove its natural oils and cause more harm than good.

Why Does Your Hair Fall After Oiling It?

Oil can cause hair to weigh down, sometimes stripping away the already broken strands. However, hard massaging can also cause hair breakage. Gently massage the oil on your scalp.

Oiling hair often & not washing properly can attract dirt & dandruff o accumulate on the scalp. This can be the reason for hair loss.

Should You Apply Oil To Dry Hair Or Wet Hair?

Oils repel water; if you apply oil to wet hair then water will repel it and won't allow for deep penetration. This will make it ineffective. You must ideally apply oil to dry hair for it to be able to nourish the deeper layers of your scalp and hair.

Should You Oil Your Hair every day?

Don't leave the oil on your hair every day as it can cause product build-up on your scalp. This can clog your pores, attract dirt, and accumulate dandruff.

Oiling your hair every day also means that you have to wash it with shampoo every day. This is not best for getting healthy, lustrous, and soft hair.

Can You Leave Oil On For 2 Days?

There is still a debate on how long we should leave the oil on. Leaving oil for more than one day is not recommended even one day is not recommended as it can cause the oil to form a layer on your scalp, clogging your pores, accumulating dandruff, and attracting dirt

Is It Okay To Apply Oil To Dirty Hair?

Don't apply oil if your hair is sweaty and too dirty. You want to reap the benefits of your hair oil, without having to deal with dirt trapped inside your pores

Wrap Up

Oiling hair 1-2 times a week is enough. Doing it every day can attract dirt & can strip away essential oils from your hair. Combing, rubbing, and vigorously massaging your hair with oil can also cause breakage. So, follow the steps we mentioned and healthy, beautiful hair will follow.
